1. Ask questions about a charity that is asking for donations.
2. Donate to charities you're familiar with.
3. Check with the state attorney general's charity registration office for evaluations of organizations.
4. If you are uncomfortable donating to an organization, say no.
5. In addition to financial support, consider a gift of your time and talents.
6. Ask about matching gifts. Many employers match employees' charitable gifts.
7. Keep good records. For gifts under $250, a returned check is sufficient proof to the Internal Revenue Service.
8. For larger gifts, get a receipt from the organization for proof of tax-deductibility.
